Welcome to the “Sarajevo 1914” blogsite. I’m Alec Nesbitt, creator of The Collection. The blog is intended to assist the sale of this HO scale model railway collection as a complete entity; not to be sold piecemeal. I hope to have it acquired and installed in time to receive visitors by the 2014 centenary of the assassination of the Archduke Franz Ferdinand at Sarajevo in Bosnia on the morning of 28 June, 1914.

Each posting will include photography of a small area of the “Sarajevo 1914 Collection”, often to illustrate a story of people whose lives will be changed by the onrushing events of the summer of 1914. The height of the adult figures averages 20mm or about three-quarters of an inch. The time in every scene will be the same: 6:45 PM (18:45 hours) on the evening of Sunday, the 28th of June, 1914. Only four of the tiny people in The Collection have heard the news of the assassination that morning at Sarajevo.

The Collection’s layout of track and landscape represents principal parts of Europe on that day as background to the study of the causes of the war that will soon engulf Europe. In 1914, Europe’s empires and kingdoms were “connected” by the “Orient-Express”, as they are in miniature in this Collection. The highly detailed scale-model of that legendary luxury train is a means of escorting the visitor from one area of The Collection to the next, much as the train did in real life.
